Melissa Carroll

Hi, I am Melissa Carroll. I am a registered nurse in the Twin Cities, and I hope to one day become a Family Nurse Practitioner. This will be my third trip down to Haiti.

The first trip I took to Haiti was in 2009 with the founders of Healing Haiti, Alyn Shannon and Jeff Gacek. We were part of the first mission groups through Healing Haiti. When I got there, I was really out of my element to the point of regretting my decision to leave the comfort of my home, family, and friends. But, the first day amongst the desperate and poor individuals of Haiti, I saw things I had only ever seen in movies. Things I thought could never exist. I was left shocked, sad, and with a breaking heart. At that moment, I knew God had sent me here for a reason. The work we did over the course of that week ultimately left me eager to return. I decided to return again but this time as a leader of a group of five individuals. Leading a group was challenge, but I was grateful to have had the experience and still cherish the bonds we formed on our trip.

I am returning to Haiti having experienced the poverty and the overwhelming emotions, yet I still am uncertain of the things I will experience, the emotions I will feel, and the ways in which my faith will deepen. The people of Haiti have a way of pulling you in, new and different, every time. This is especially true as I will be returning to provide check ups of orphans I have met before as a part of Grace Village. It'll be hard knowing that even with the donated medical supplies we have, we simply cannot help or heal every orphan that comes to us. Nevertheless, with the gifts that I have been given, I will continually seek to be the hands and feet of Christ.
